Dear Friends,
As most of you will know we have had a very busy start to our re-launched Friends programme. In the Summer, we re-established our relationship with Exeter College and during the Autumn we were enchanted by Philip Pullman, entertained by Prue Leith and educated about Oxford’s buildings by Debbie Dance. Readers, writers, poets, bakers and historians filled the nave.
Coming up in the Spring we anticipate with pleasure a performance based on the Seasons with words and music organised and performed by a group of talented Friends (1st March). This will be followed by an exciting visit to Oxford Airport where, with the support of Kidlington Connections, we will learn about the pioneering career as a pilot of Spitfire Girl – Jackie Moggridge (12th March). On Bank Holiday Saturday, 3rd May we will have the opportunity to try out local food with global flavours at our food fair – A Taste of Spring.. All these events need detailed planning and help on the day. More help with them all would be greatly appreciated.
The money we have made this year comes to over £8,000. As you know it goes towards the nurturing and maintenance of the fabric of our wonderful and historic building of St Mary’s. With a leaky roof and a raft of other demands on funds, every pound we make is precious and the more well-attended activities we can organise the better.
So, please, if you have the time, energy and interest to help with any of our future events, would you sign up to do so. You can find a comments form detailing all the varied ways you can help attached here or on our website. It would be wonderful and very helpful to hear from you. Thank you.
You might also be interested to know about the annual Winter Tea Talks being organised by all the Kidlington Anglican Churches. The first of these will be at 3pm on Sunday 12th January in St John’s Church, Broadway, OX5 1DD. The speaker will be William Whyte, Professor of Social and Architectural History, St John’s College, Oxford – speaking on “The accidental university – a short(ish) history of Oxford”. William is now Chair of the Oxford Preservation Trust, with a wealth of other interests from English Heritage, Blue Plaques, Westminster Abbey….. Future talks will be on 9th February and 2nd March. The talks, followed by refreshments, are open to anyone with donations invited towards church funds.
