Leading Change

Leading Traditional Institutions Through Change – a discussion with Oxford University Vice-Chancellor and The Bishop of Oxford

Professor Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, and The Rt Rev. Steven Croft, Bishop of Oxford, two of Oxford’s most influential leaders will come together for a rare public conversation: “Leading Change’. Both are grappling with profound contemporary challenges while honouring their historic legacies.

The event is on 21 March 2026 at 6pm. The conversation will be chaired by Joanna Foster CBE, Programme Director and herself a well seasoned leader of major national and Oxford organisations. She describes the event as “a truly unique opportunity to hear two remarkable leaders discuss the real challenges of steering ancient institutions into the future,” “Both Oxford University and the Diocese of Oxford face questions that test the very essence of leadership—how do you honour tradition while meeting the scientific, spiritual and social demands of the 21st century?”

Professor Tracey was a pupil at the Gosford Hill School before developing her academic career and being appointed as Vice Chancellor in 2023. Bishop Steven has served since 2016 and has overseen the transformation of rural Oxfordshire. The diocesan office is in the centre of the rapidly expanding business area of Kidlington. His contribution has included supporting women to take leading roles in The Church of England. He relinquishes his role in July 2026.

Potential topics of discussion include freedom of speech, diversity inclusion and equal opportunities, medical developments, the rapidly evolving AI landscape and the questions of the role of faith and spirituality in contemporary society.
